George Winston is SOLD OUT!
All CD and poster sales benefit Helena Food Share. Food donations welcome at the door.
Celebrated solo pianist George Winston returns to the Myrna Loy for a concert inspired by the seasons and topographies of Winston’s favorite landscapes. He’ll perform tunes from his 2017 album, Spring Carousel and his 13 previous solo albums.
George Winston grew up mainly in Montana, and also spent his later formative years in Mississippi and Florida. He was deeply influenced by instrumental rock and R&B artists like Floyd Cramer, the Ventures, Booker T & The MG’s, and Jimmy Smith. He started playing organ in 1967, inspired by R&B, jazz, Blues and rock (especially the Doors).
In 1971 he switched to acoustic piano after hearing 1920s and 30s recordings by legendary stride pianists Thomas “Fats” Waller and Teddy Wilson. At that time he started developing his own style of melodic instrumental music on solo piano, called folk piano.
Today, George Winston mainly tours and performs live concerts, raising money for food banks and service organizations in every community he visits. His Spring Carousel album is also a benefit for cancer research.
