The uncannily young and celebrated pianist/bandleader Brandon Goldberg plays with chops, restraint, verve, and pure joy. And he swings like mad in the great company of his bandmates.
Brandon Goldberg is 16 years old – let’s just get that out of the way, so we can talk about the merits of this talented jazz pianist without resorting to qualifiers such as “for someone his age” or “for a teenager” …because the music he creates would be remarkable for an experienced musician two or three times his age. He approaches each tune with an arranger’s sensibility. He has what tenor sax legend Lester Young would have called “big ears,” as he has absorbed the unique language and vocabulary of jazz. And he has the classical chops to match anyone.
Goldberg has already performed at top venues including Jazz at Lincoln Center, Carnegie Hall, and the Apollo Theater, as well as at major competitions, conventions, and television programs. He is bringing his quintet to The Myrna Loy on a special project supported by Chamber Music America.
Check him out below on a 2019 video playing one of our favorite standards, “Blackbird.”
What a way to burn down The Myrna Loy’s 2022-23 season!
