Gordon Zuelke’s watercolors combine his passion for cars with his devotion to the art he has developed and taught over the last 50 years.
Zuelke uses layers of glazes, gradation, lifting, and charging of colors to evoke the mirror-like surfaces of glass, chrome, and glossy reflective paint on the car bodies. His vivid colors, strong values, attention to detail, and clear love of the subject matter—with a touch of nostalgia to sweeten the images—give his watercolors a bold, contemporary spirit.
Zuelke studied arts education at MSU, and taught high-school art for 35 years. His works have been accepted to national juried watercolor shows in nine states, earning 11 awards, including 2016 Watermedia Excellence Award from the Montana Watercolor Society. He is past president of the Last Chance Art Association, Montana Institute of the Arts, and Montana Watercolor Society, and has been a juror of one national and three state art shows.
