State of Love: Pride Art & Poetry

June 15, 2022

August 5, 2022

Opening Reception:

Tuesday, July 19, 2022

5:30 pm

State of Love features the work of 18 artists and 5 poets whose work exemplifies a journey toward openness, growth and, ultimately, love. These works are diverse, ranging from jewelry to hangings, from stained glass to gouache.

This is the Jailhouse Gallery’s second consecutive Pride art exhibit. Some artists returned from last year, including students in the Fine Art Department at Capital High who produced some truly remarkable works.

This year the curators invited allies to exhibit alongside LGBTQ+ artists. With almost 30 submissions, the curators selected pieces with a strong sense of connection with the queer journey, or intentional support of others in their journey. Once the show started taking form, a vivid theme emerged from the artists themselves: a theme of love, acceptance, and encouragement.

“It’s very important that we bring allies into our conversation and into events like this. Having common ground is where we strengthen our connections with neighbors and community.”

– Janelle DeBray, Lead Curator

Live Poetry Showcase – July 19, 7:30 pm

Like wildflowers in summer, poetry often opens into bloom only in quiet spaces. Join us Tuesday, July 19 (following the artist reception) for a showcase of live poetry giving voice to journeys of growth, acceptance, individuality, and love.

It’s not a poetry slam; more like an embrace. An ASL interpreter will be provided; drinks available at the pub.
