Artist Statement

After receiving a 35mm camera as a graduation gift, I spent four years wandering around photographing trees, plants, gardens, modest houses, landscapes. I was accepted into the graduate program at the University of Colorado, Boulder and received an MFA in photography in 1976. Eight months before my thesis show I started composing/constructing photos by arranging objects—including my own hands, face, pieces of hair, string, fishing flies, tape—and photographing those constructions. I’ve been making narrative constructed images ever since.

For years I’ve photographed flowers and often flowers that are “past their prime.” Flowers whose petals have dropped, sometimes browning, whose leaves have drooped and curled, with rigid bleached stems are to me, as beautiful as those in the glory of their newness, their high bloom. I’ve used pressed and dried flowers in my narrative photo constructions. A year ago I decided to photograph them as single objects, to confirm and to share, their unique beauty.
