The islands of the Cape Verde are notoriously barren, yet they’ve produced some of West Africa’s most enchanting singers. Ever since the death of diva Cesária Évora in 2011, fans have been waiting for a Cape Verdean singer with similar poise and emotional power. Well, they may have found her in Lucibela — a 32-year-old singer with a magnificent voice, liquid and effortless across a wide vocal range.
Born in 1986 on the island of São Nicolau, Lucibela’s warm voice formed from years of assimilation of the sounds of morna and coladera. She first began performing with a band in high school, singing for tourists in Boa Vista hotels. She performed the songs made famous by the great singers of Cabo Verde such as Évora, Titina and Bana; songs that she knew by heart and yet made her own. In 2012, she moved to Praia, and attracted the attention of many of the city’s music venues. She made her breakthrough at the 2017 Atlantic Music Expo, leading to invitations to perform in Belgium and Lisbon. It was in Lisbon where she recorded her debut album with producer Toy Vieira who happened to be Cesária Évora’s musical director. We’re extremely lucky to host Lucibela as she continues the great tradition of Cape Verde vocalists.
