Artist Talk with Chuck Hunter at 6:00 pm!
I have a lifelong interest in photography. Beginning in high school, it is an avocation I pursued through the decades, sometimes intensely, sometimes sporadically, but always with a desire to create images that conveyed meaning and beauty. Retirement from a career in public service, followed shortly by the pandemic, provided the time and space for me to devote concentrated effort to that avocation, and particularly into my first creative love, black and white photography. Landscapes, primarily of Montana, are my main subject matter, although the small details of life and light that surround us also capture my attention.
I am influenced by Ansel Adams, Edward Weston, the photographers of the WPA, and the photojournalists of the Life and Look era. The historical work of Haynes and Curtis inspire me, as do the works of Stieglitz, Steichen, and Cartier Bresson. In today’s world, where all of us hold cameras in the palm of our hands and more photographs are taken each day than any time in history, the quiet timelessness of black and white appeals to me even more.
Chuck Hunter worked in Montana State Government for over 30 years, first as an administrator in a variety of executive branch positions, and then serving four terms in the Montana House of Representatives, including two terms as Minority Leader. During his time in the Executive Branch, Chuck held positions of leadership in Unemployment Insurance, Workers’ Compensation, Human Rights, Child Welfare, and Health Insurance, including Medicaid and CHIP.
Chuck and his wife Casi are long term Helena residents, and have four grown children. They are both retired, and are active supporters of a variety of non-profit groups in the arts and community service arenas.
